They spend most of their time doing coordinated sequences that appear to be like a war dance. They also spend a lot of time punching and kicking in the air.

 

Unlike tae kwon do or karate, Muay Thai and Kickboxing strike actual objects like bags and pads. At the same time the techniques are broken down into simple 3-5 movements.  Also unlike karate or tae kwon do your child will actually be able to defend themselves in half the time it would take with a traditional martial art.

 

The type you choose for your child, though, isn’t as important as how a studio approaches instruction, Lake says. "Before you sign on, meet with the head of the studio. Be honest about your child’s challenges. Explain what you’re hoping he can get out of the class."

For the best experience, the school you choose should:

  • Take a modern approach that focuses on character development.

  • Provide a free class so you can also see if your child and the school are a good fit.

  • Have a low student-to-teacher ratio. Ideally, each class should have less than 16 students per class.  If there are too many students, your child will not get the individualized attention he needs.

  • Look to make sure that the classes are broken up by age because the needs of a 4 year old are not the same as a 10 year old.

  • Have experience teaching kids with learning and attention issues. While it’s important for instructors to push students, they should also be supportive and understanding about your child’s challenges.

  • Make sure your child is having fun. If they are then they will stay more focused.
